Five-Day Invitational Institute

Programs will be offered on Saturdays.

Registration fee is $695 per participant (Breakfast and Lunch Ticket included)

8:00 am - 4:00 pm

If your school can't or won't send you, you will qualify for a partial scholarship.

Since our programs are authorized by the State and Federal Government as part of California’s effort to ensure that all schools are NCLB compliant, you may wish to use funds from Title I, (Disadvantaged Learners), Title II, Part A (Professional Development), or Title III (English Learners).

TIER 1: Common Core and Standards-Based Instructional Practices (The content of 1B will be suitable for returning participants*)

1B Using STORIES to Enhance Common Core and Standards-Based Foreign Language and ELD Instruction
1C Common Core and Standards-Based Practices for Teachers of Spanish Speakers

• Common Core and Standards-based competencies and academic content
• lesson design and the instructional delivery sequence
• practicum: generic input, guided practice, extension, and assessment structures
• strategies for working with English learners and diverse, low performing populations
• techniques for developing literacy and incorporating technology in the curriculum
• reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

TIER 2: Beyond the Textbook - Common Core and Standards-Based Instructional Practices

2A Beyond the Textbook: Common Core and Standards-Based Instructional Practices (Levels 1-3)

• effective use of State Board adopted texts and supplementary materials
• Standards-based unit design, development of Common Core competencies, technology-enhanced curriculum
• practicum: delivery of academic content, literacy development, reading/listening, writing/speaking structures
• formative and summative assessment, considerations for portfolios
• strategies for working with English learners and diverse, low performing populations
• reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

Preparing students for the AP FRENCH and SPANISH Language and Culture Exam and the Common Core
Spanish Units for 2016-2017 will differ from those from 2015-2016; In the French program, all materials will be newly created.

• Standards-based content knowledge and content specific instructional practices
• introduction to the content and format of the examination and the AP Framework
• integrative skills: focus on academic content, culture, listening, reading and Common Core competencies
• integrative skills: focus on academic content, culture, speaking, writing and Common Core competencies
• functional language use; developing student accuracy through content and context
• reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

Preparing students for the AP SPANISH Literature and Culture Exam and the Common Core
Selections for 2016-2017 will differ from those from 2015-2016

• Standards-based content knowledge and content specific instructional practices
• introduction to the content and format of the examination and the AP Framework
• exploration of major historical periods and literary movements in Spain and Spanish America
• focus on academic content and Common Core competencies
• strategies for the analysis of poetry, prose and drama; study of representative authors and works
• examination of parallel manifestations in art and music
• reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

TIER 3: Developing Leadership Skills of World Language Educators: Common Core and Standards-Based Instruction

• proficiency and performance; standards documents; backward design; unit-, lesson-, episode-design; learning plans
• academic and cultural content; authentic texts rich in language, culture and content; interpretive, interpersonal, presentational communication
• assessment and evaluation, can-do statements, rubrics, integrative performance tasks
• design of professional development experiences; fundamental concepts; interpretive, interpersonal, presentational tasks
• TELL: environment, the learning experience, collaboration, planning, performance and feedback, professionalism, learning tools
