Focus on State and Common Core Standards

ADVANCED COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED PRACTICES FOR WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATORS

Program Content: Participants will learn to design standards-based materials using backward design and real-world objectives that are stage- and age-appropriate. They will locate authentic texts rich in language, culture and content and create culturally-authentic interpretive, interpersonal and presentational activities that require the use of 21st Century Skills and Common Core Competencies. Participants will learn to teach the materials they create using pedagogies that reflect research and best practices.

ENHANCING COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY
Program Content: Participants will learn current technologies used to enhance world language instruction and support Common Core efforts. They will locate authentic materials including video, music, art, graphics, texts and other data; make input comprehensible by effectively using PowerPoint and Moviemaker; facilitate interpersonal communication through online sites such as GoogleClassroom; and support presentational communication using a variety of online tools. During each session, participants will practice new skills and develop lessons that incorporate common core elements. Participants must be familiar with the basic functions of the programs in Microsoft Office and bring a laptop with wireless capability.

USING FILMS AND ONLINE TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIESOF SPANISH SPEAKERS

Program Content: Participants will explore cross-cultural links between full length and short films and history, current events, art, music and literature and will examine procedures for developing Common Core and Standards-based competencies using film to enhance the curriculum and infuse it with authentic experiences of cultural merit. They will learn to use online technologies to support student interpretation of audio, video and written texts, participation in interpersonal communication, and creation of presentations and video products.

NEW BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK: STANDARDS-BASED AND COMMON CORE UNIT DESIGN FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS
Program Content: Participants will learn to design thematic units that may be used with Spanish speakers at a variety of
instructional levels and will link receptive and productive language development activities with global studies in history, current
events, art, music and literature. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops/tablets with wireless capability so they can work collaboratively and share the materials they develop, create a weebly or DropBox account and a gmail address.
